Landfill Site:

We have in place a program to pick up cardboard and yard waste separately, allowing us to place them in a designated area where they will be burned or composted. This can reduce landfill by up to 50% thus extending the life of the site. Many landfills in the area (Gimli, Stonewall, Selkirk, etc.) have been forced to close as they reached their capacity.

Yard waste in paper bags will continue to be collected on a separate run along with branches. This will reduce the amount placed in the landfill.

If you wish to transport your yard waste to the landfill site in plastic bags, you may empty them into our new composting pile thereby reducing the amount in the landfill. Upon arrival at the landfill site, please check with the attendant to ensure items are placed in the correct location.

These items, if separated and put out (preferably in colour coded bags, either yellow or orange) as cardboard would be recognized as such and picked up by the collector.

Residents are required to show their landfill pass when using the landfill site. We are experiencing problems with non-residents from surrounding areas using the dump site. This puts a burden on the site and is hard to control without this measure.

Electronic Recycling includes televisions, computers, radios, smoke detectors, etc. which can now be recycled.

In response to the Provincial regulations, the Village of Dunnottar will enforce a $20.00, per item, levy on all mattresses, carpet and upholstered furniture being deposited at the Village Landfill.

Composting Basics

Composting your food and yard waste at home conserves resources and provides a rich soil amendment for your garden. Read on to discover how easy composting really is. By recycling and composting, households can cut their garbage by up to 50%.

 Why Should I Compost?

It is estimated that some 35 percent of the residential waste stream consists of compostable materials (kitchen and yard wastes). Encouraging backyard composting is one of the simplest, most effective steps that can be taken to reduce the amount of waste requiring transport to landfill sites. Composting cuts disposal costs, saves energy, and reduces air and water pollution. An added plus, composting generates large volumes of a highly desirable garden soil.

Can I Use the Compost?

Screened Compost - Residents, who reside within the Village of Dunnottar may access the screened compost when available.  As the piles of compost age, the Village has a screener attend to site to remove any impurities from the compost.  All you need to is your valid landfill permit and a way of transporting the compost from the site.

Unscreened Compost - Landfill users who do not reside within the Village are able to access the unscreened compost at any time. You will require a valid landfill permit and a way of transporting the compost from the site.

Conserve Resources!

  • Keep valuable organic resources -- yard and kitchen waste -- from being landfilled.
  • Return valuable nutrients to the soil and help maintain soil quality and fertility for food production.
  • Save fossil fuels that are otherwise used to transport organic waste to landfill.

Build healthy soil

  • Compost improves soil texture, air circulation and water retention by breaking down heavy soils (especially useful for Manitoba gumbo).
  • By feeding the soil, compost provides the organic matter and nutrients necessary for plant growth and survival, and improved yields.
  • Compost is mild, won't burn plants, and is a natural, slow-release fertilizer. It's great for your garden and it's free!

Reduce Pollution!

  • Organics in landfills break down anaerobically, producing methane gas„a substance 20 times more powerful than carbon dioxide as a contributor to climate change.
  • Transporting compostable wastes to landfill produces air pollution, which also fuels climate change.
  • Buried organics can react with metals in landfills to produce toxic leachate. This has to be removed and treated to eliminate a potential source of groundwater pollution.
  • Residues from chemical fertilizers leach nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium into sewer systems, lakes and streams. Alternatively, compost is a pollution-free soil enhancer.

Reduce Landfill Costs!

  • About one-third of residential waste is compostable. Costs for waste collection and disposal can be significantly decreased by reducing garbage volume.
  • Extending the life of current landfills will postpone the need for costly new landfill sites.
